In recent years, the theme of’energy independence it has gone from a theoretical concept to a concrete necessity for families and businesses. The increase in energy costs, united with the’Instability of international markets, has made it clear how risky it is to depend on fossil fuels like gas.
Today, thanks to the evolution of plant technologies, it is possible to design homes capable of produce, manage, and optimize energy autonomously, drastically reducing costs and improving living comfort.
But is it really possible to make a house independent of gas?
In this article, we explain how achieve energy independence in a house through a integrated plant system and how we designed and implemented a complete project for one of our clients in Umbria.

What is true energy independence for a home
When it comes to energy independence, it is important to clarify one aspect: it is not necessarily about completely disconnecting from the electrical grid, but rather about Minimize dependence on external supplies, especially gas and purchased energy.
From a design perspective, an energy-independent house is a system in which:
- the Energy production occurs locally, thanks to the installation of photovoltaic systems;
- energy comes managed and stored through storage systems which allow it to be used in the evening, at night, or during days with low solar radiation;
- consumption is optimized through high-efficiency systems, such as heat pumps, capable of completely replacing traditional systems.
This approach represents the evolution of traditional energy efficiency: not just reducing consumption, but rethink completely the way energy is produced and used within the home.
Why is it essential to abandon gas today
The gas It has been the primary solution for home heating for decades, but today it presents increasingly evident critical issues.
From a technical and economic standpoint, gas entails:
- one direct dependence on unstable international markets
- costs that are difficult to predict in the medium to long term
- lower yields compared to modern electrical systems
- CO₂ emissions not compatible with sustainability goals
Furthermore, even the most efficient boilers remain combustion-based systems, with structural limitations that are difficult to overcome.
Le renewable solutions, on the other hand, allow the design of systems in which:
- The energy is self-produced
- Costs are more stable over time
- The system is scalable and integratable
The transition from gas to renewables is no longer a “green” choice, but a choice Smart technical and economic.
How to make a house energy independent
Reach the’energy independence requires a Integrated design. It's not enough to install a photovoltaic system: a coherent system must be built where each component communicates with the others.
From an engineering perspective, the three fundamental elements are:
- Photovoltaic production
- battery pile
- Efficient use (heat pump)
These systems must be sized based on:
- Real-world consumption
- Home features
- usage habits
- Thermal and electrical needs
The difference between a standard installation and a truly efficient one lies precisely in Analysis and design phase.
Photovoltaic system with storage: the heart of the system
L’photovoltaic system represents the starting point for any energy independence strategy. From a technical standpoint, photovoltaics allows for the conversion of’solar energy to electrical energy, but the real evolution is represented by’Integration with storage systems. Without batteries, a significant portion of the energy produced is fed into the grid and therefore “lost” in terms of self-consumption.
With a storage system, however, it is possible to:
- store the energy produced during the day
- use it in the evening and at night
- drastically reduce grid withdrawal
A well-designed plant can reach levels of very high self-consumption, bringing the home concretely closer to a condition of energy autonomy.
Heat pump: heating your home without gas
La heat pump it's the component that allows for the complete elimination of the gas. Unlike traditional boilers, the heat pump it does not generate heat through combustion; instead, it transfers it from the external environment (air, water, or ground) into the home. This principle allows for very high coefficients of performance (COP), with superior efficiencies compared to traditional systems.
From a design perspective, the heat pump allows for:
- manage heating and cooling
- produce domestic hot water
- integrate perfectly with photovoltaic systems
The result is a fully electric, efficient, and fossil-fuel-free system.
A gas-free home: is it really possible?
Eliminating gas is an increasingly common choice and, above all, technically feasible thanks to the evolution of electrical plant systems and their integration with renewable sources.
A gasless home relies on an integrated system where:
- The energy requirement is covered by renewable sources
- Consumption is optimized through high-efficiency systems.
- Energy is managed intelligently
From a security and management perspective, this also entails a Simplification of home electrical system, with minor risks e greater control.
Energy efficiency: where to start
Before intervening on the systems, it is always essential to evaluate the building status, starting from an overall view of its construction features and of the Energy behavior.
A’Preliminary technical analysis allows you to identify:
- thermal dispersions
- housing criticalities
- inefficiencies of existing systems
Addressing insulation and fixtures, when necessary, allows for reduce energy needs and improve the effectiveness of the installed systems.
From a “full throttle” home to a “fully renewable” home”
To truly understand the value of an integrated system and what it means to achieve’energy independence, it's useful to analyze a real case, in which we have redesigned the plant system of a dwelling, starting from an in-depth analysis of the existing gas-powered systems.
The client approached Risparmio Energetico for targeted technical consulting, with the goal of evaluating improvement solutions. Through the study of consumption and system performance, it was possible to design a Custom integrated system, completely powered by renewable sources.

How much does it cost to make a house energetically independent
When talking about inenergy dependence, one of the most frequent questions concerns the cost of the intervention. In reality, there is no standard figure, because each project is custom-sized based on consumption, the characteristics of the home, and the client's objectives. From a design perspective, the cost varies mainly as a function of:
- photovoltaic system size
- Energy storage system capacity
- Type and power of the heat pump
- Building characteristics and level of dispersion
However, it is essential to evaluate this type of intervention not as a mere cost, but as a Medium to long-term investment, considering:
- bill reduction
- access to incentives and benefits
- real estate value increase
Through a’Technical analysis and a targeted consulting It is possible to estimate the return on investment by evaluating the savings on the bill based on actual consumption and the solutions adopted. Risparmio Energetico supports the client throughout this process, translating data into conscious and sustainable choices.
Available Incentives and Thermal Account 3.0
Today there are incentives and benefits which allow a significant reduction in initial investment for energy efficiency interventions and the installation of systems powered by renewable sources.
Among these, one of the most relevant is the Conto Termico 3.0, an incentive that supports the replacement of old wood, pellet, or gas heating systems with high-efficiency stoves, boilers, fireplaces, or heat pumps, and the installation of solar thermal or photovoltaic systems, which can be integrated with storage systems and electric charging stations.
Thanks to these incentives, it is possible to:
- significantly reduce the cost of the intervention
- accelerate return on investment
We discussed this in depth in a dedicated article of ours: click here.
Is it really worth it today?
From a technical and economic standpoint, the answer is yes. In a context characterized by Instability of energy markets, unpredictable bill increases and heavy reliance on external sources, investing today in’energy independence represents an increasingly conscious choice.
Intervening in systems means not only reduce energy costs over time, but also to replace obsolete systems with more efficient technologies. It's an approach that allows us to Hedge against price fluctuations and have greater control over your energy spending, while simultaneously improving Comfort and sustainability.
